Job Description

Our client is hiring a Toronto-based Director of Software Engineering, who reports directly to the President.

In this role, you will be responsible for leading their team of developers and architects and orchestrating the delivery of content to millions of investors across their portfolio of targeted websites - all powered by their proprietary platform. You will work directly with product management in delivering on priorities and be a key player in driving strategic planning, project execution, development of engineering talent, and the ongoing operation and improvement of the development team and its processes.

The successful candidate will have an established background in developing scalable consumer-facing websites, a deep technical background, strong organizational aptitude, great communication skills and a history of leading teams to achieve results in a fast-paced environment with creativity and great analytical reasoning skills.

Responsibilities:

- Scale and manage their Canadian-based team of developers and architects in an Agile/Scrum environment.
- Lead the delivery of software projects, test plans, continued support of existing applications, and development operations.
- Lead the prioritization of opportunities for technical advancement of software architecture.
- Partner with the CTO in the evaluation of technical strategy/design.
- Define and implement KPIs; Review and report on project progress to the leadership team.
- Define best practices and continuously refine processes to improve quality and throughput taking into account coding practices/technology, code quality, development infrastructure, and refactoring.
- Partner with Product management in the scoping and estimating of all projects.
- Lead planning and sequencing of the execution of work.
- Develop the technical aptitude of the development team; set up performance goals for and evaluate the performance of team members; provide coaching and facilitate professional development.
- Create and drive strategies in alignment with the company's overall vision and business goals.

Must Have Skills:

Requirements:

- B.S., M.S., and/or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Mathematics, Software Engineering or equivalent.
- 3-5 years experience building large web applications with a focus on open source technologies like Ruby on Rails.
- 3-5 years experience leading teams of developers.
- Experience leading technical projects from inception to delivery.
- Experience operating and monitoring highly available systems in production.
- Experience with web application and/or distributed systems development.
- Solid understanding of software development life cycles, tools, and processes.
- Strong communication & presentation skills (verbal & written).
- Extremely detail-oriented and able to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
- Strong project management experience with multiple project streams and ability to handle shifting priorities.
